The Underwater Archaeology of the American Revolution on Lake Champlain

This presentation from Chris Sabick of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum will share information on a number of previous, recent, and current research efforts focused on the Revolutionary War in general, and the Battle of Valcour Bay (October 1776) and its aftermath. Archaeological excavations at Valcour Bay, Arnold’s Bay, and recent documentation and research efforts on the gunboat Spitfire will be discussed. The combination of historical research and archaeological evidence leads to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the pivotal events that took place on Lake Champlain in 1776. This event is co-sponsored by the Shelburne Historical Society and Vermont Humanities Council and is presented in accordance with this year’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
