Told from both of their perspectives\, Light shares the harrowing and ultimately hopeful journey of Rachel’s struggle with and recovery from anorexia. Narrated primarily by Nancy\, with powerful journal entries and reflections from Rachel before\, during\, and after treatment\, this deeply personal memoir offers insight into the insidious voice of an eating disorder and the strength it takes to overcome it. The conversation will touch on mental health stigmas\, OCD\, family history\, and the road to lasting recovery. Moderating the event is licensed psychologist-master Suzanne Adams\, founder and clinical director of the Adams Center for Body and Mind. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Written in 1935 during the rise of fascism abroad and economic despair at home\, Lewis’s work remains relevant today. Blending sharp political satire with a chillingly realistic scenario\, the novel imagines how authoritarianism could take root in the United States under the guise of populism and moral reform. Described upon release as “a message to thinking Americans\,” It Can’t Happen Here explores the fragility of democratic institutions and the ease with which fear\, misinformation\, and charismatic leadership can undermine them. Yes\, every hump day at the lunch hour the hip cats of the NPRS gather to lend their voices to wonderful poetry collections and anthologies\, cold reading aloud through whole books for the first half hour\, then sharing works in progress\, poetic reflections\, and beloved bits of verse for the second. Always\, we end with a take-home writing prompt. Drop-ins and new members are welcome!

SUMMARY:Exhibitionists Book Club: Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl
DESCRIPTION:The Exhibitionists are back with another great book club series pairing great books with exhibits currently on display at Shelburne Museum. You might remember Carrie Brownstein as half of the comedy duo that made up the sketch show Portlandia\, but punk rockers remember her from the riot grrrl band Sleater-Kinney. We think her memoir pairs oh-so-nicely with the museum’s Sound\, Art\, and Ink Exhibit of Higher Ground gig posters currently on display at the Pizzagalli Gallery. To help facilitate the discussion\, we’re joined by Kat Redniss\, the museum’s Public Programs Educator.

DESCRIPTION:Death Cafes are opportunities to gather and increase awareness of death so that we might make the most of our finite lives. Shelburne resident and optometrist Nick Marconi has been leading local death cafes for more than 10 years (most recently at Village Wine and Coffee). Now he’s here at the Pierson Library in a new monthly series of intimate discussions\, where we’ll voice concerns\, share stories\, ask questions\, and think together about this fact of life.
