SUMMARY:Samhain Oracle Drawing and Ancestor Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Before the Catholics and the candy companies made it the Halloween we know today\, Oct. 31st was Samhain (pronounced SAH-win)\, a Gaelic festival marking the end of harvest time and the midpoint between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice. This was a time when the doorways to other worlds were said to open\, allowing in the spirits of the dead and every manner of supernatural being. To honor this time\, we will gather for a sandwich lunch (with gluten-free options)\, setting extra food for our ancestors and drawing oracle cards to gain insights.

SUMMARY:Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Death Cafes are opportunities to gather and increase awareness of death so that we might make the most of our finite lives. Shelburne resident and optometrist Nick Marconi has been leading local death cafes for more than 10 years (most recently at Village Wine and Coffee). Now he’s here with us at the Pierson Library in a new monthly series of intimate discussions\, where we’ll voice concerns\, share stories\, question and think together about this hard fact of life. It’s not always easy. But when we share\, heart to heart\, we build community and experience a special joy that enhances our lives now. Space limited to 12 participants for the sake of intimacy. To register please call he library at 802-985-5124.

SUMMARY:Living with Climate Chaos: Gardening with Native Plants with Charlotte Albers
DESCRIPTION:The next talk in our Climate Chaos series sees us exploring regional gardening in the face of increasingly extreme weather fluctuations. Flooding\, erosion\, drought–little is off the table any longer for the local green thumbs. Come learn about tough\, resilient native plants that can help solve problems at your home and enhance local biodiversity. Charlotte Albers\, a landscape designer who created the master plan for the Pierson Library campus\, will highlight low maintenance favorites including many selections around our building. This event is presented in partnership with the Shelburne Climate and Energy Committee and the UVM Master Gardener Extension Program.

SUMMARY:Jack-o'-Lantern Carving Fun
DESCRIPTION:  \nLegend has it that old Jack tricked the great goat of the underworld a time or two\, and as a result his mortal soul can never find rest\, roaming this earth of ours with nothing to guide his sojourns but two burning coals inside a hollowed out turnip\, just another will-o’-the-wisp like so many ghost lights\, or maybe that’s all just swamp gas and bioluminescence. Either way\, we holiday hounds find ourselves seasonally cutting figures into empty gourds and plunking candles down in them. It’s what Jack would have wanted! So\, whether you’ve carved your annual Jack-o’-Lantern yet or not\, won’t you join us? Carving begins at 3:30pm\, but if scooping out pumpkin guts is your thing feel free to arrive early! To register\, please call the library at 802-985-5124.

SUMMARY:Peter Camman Author Talk: The Flies Are Too Damn Small: Adventures of a Deeply Flawed Angler
DESCRIPTION:Author and fisherman Peter Camman sets his sights on the art of storytelling\, revealing how fishing tales are their own unique form of folklore\, what makes a great story\, and how the universal appeal of the great outdoors is the perfect subject for a good yarn. Along the way he might tell a tale or two from his new book\, such as the man who catches sharks and bluefish with a drone\, the one who fashions fishing lures out of toilet chains\, and the two fellers who engineer a stampede of grasshoppers at the edge of a trout stream. Camman has been engaging readers for more than 30 years on fishing\, both those who’ve never baited a hook and the lifetime anglers. Come check out this presentation on his latest!
