SUMMARY:Unhoused Voices: A Pop-up Book Club and Community Discussion About Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of Rough Sleepers by Tracy Kidder. This powerful work follows Dr. Jim O’Connell\, a Boston physician who devoted his career to bringing compassionate\, street-based health care to people experiencing homelessness. After being asked to delay a prestigious fellowship for a one-year project\, O’Connell found his life’s calling—building a model of care rooted in dignity\, trust\, and what he calls “a system of friends.” Copies are available to borrow at the library’s first-floor circulation desk. Following our book conversation\, Shelburne’s Social Services Committee Chair Sean Moran and Brandie Benoit\, Board of Directors Chair of the Shelburne Food Shelf\, will share what they’re seeing locally from a boots-on-the-ground perspective\, along with practical ways you can support unhoused neighbors in our community. All are welcome to join this timely and important discussion.

SUMMARY:Tom Guiler Author Talk: The Handcrafted Utopia
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special author talk with museum director and historian Tom Guiler! Traveling from Oneida\, New York with his family\, Tom will discuss his new book\, The Handcrafted Utopia. As the jacket describes: “In response to the trauma of industrialization and urbanization in the late nineteenth century\, the Arts and Crafts Movement took America by storm. Art exhibits\, workshops\, and societies dedicated to handicraft\, worker dignity\, and the production of beautiful art for the masses sprouted from California to Boston. They sought to reform the economic and social inequalities of industrial capitalism through communal living\, artistic development\, craft\, and the creation and sale of finely crafted furniture\, architecture\, metalwork\, and more.” Come learn how this powerful movement reshaped American art\, labor\, and community and why its ideals still resonate today.

SUMMARY:Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Death Cafes offer a welcoming space to gather and increase awareness of death so we can make the most of our finite lives. Moderated by Shelburne resident Nick Marconi\, these intimate monthly discussions provide an opportunity to share stories\, voice concerns\, ask questions\, and reflect together on this universal part of life. Conversations vary depending on who’s in the room. They may explore existential or philosophical themes\, or shift toward practical topics such as DNR forms\, wills\, and rights of survivorship. While these discussions can be challenging\, open and heartfelt dialogue helps build community and fosters a sense of connection that enriches our lives in the present. To register\, call the library at 802-985-5124.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Book Club: Cyclonopedia
DESCRIPTION:Philosophy Book Club is back and have we got a doozy for you this month! The seminal text of theory-fiction by Iranian philosopher Reza Negarestani\, Cyclonopedia: Complicity with Anonymous Materials. Can’t say it much better than the book jacket does: “At once a horror fiction\, a work of speculative theology\, an atlas of demonology\, a political samizdat and a philosophic grimoire…The journey to the Underworld begins with petroleum basins and the rotting Sun\, continuing along the tentacled pipelines of oil\, and at last unfolding in the desert\, where monotheism meets the Earth’s tarry dreams of insurrection against the Sun.” Whoa!

SUMMARY:Coffee and Conversation: Senior Living
DESCRIPTION:This month Coffee and Conversation invites you to reflect on or share about the experience of being a senior citizen. What is unique to this phase of life? Does our culture offer enough respect to its elders? How can our society better accommodate the needs\, perspectives\, and experience of this segment of the population? Coffee and Conversation is an open invite to share and communicate with neighbors over a cup of joe and a tasty donut. We’ll fearlessly and respectfully tackle any topic knowing that while we may not always agree\, we’ll always be able to meet.
