SUMMARY:A Promise Delivered: Ten American Heroes and the Battle to Rename Our Nation's Military Bases: Connor Williams Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with author\, historian\, and Professor Connor Williams as he discusses his powerful new book\, A Promise Delivered. In 2020\, a bipartisan act of Congress created the Naming Commission and charged it with a historic mission: to rename nine of the U.S. military’s most prominent bases\, all of which had been named for Confederate leaders. Over twenty months\, the commission gathered input from tens of thousands of Americans and carefully examined the nation’s past to select new names that reflect its highest ideals. The result was a list of ten remarkable Americans\, individuals whose courage\, service\, and leadership embody the best of the country. Drawing on his firsthand experience as the commission’s lead historian\, Williams brings these figures to life\, from President Dwight D. Eisenhower to Civil War surgeon Mary Walker to General Richard Cavazos. \nIn 2025\, the restoration of the original Confederate base names reignited national debate\, underscoring the ongoing struggle over how we remember and honor the past. A Promise Delivered offers a compelling and deeply human account of that effort\, one that invites us to reflect on history\, identity\, and the values we choose to uphold. Copies of the book will be available for purchase from our friends at the Flying Pig Bookstore.

SUMMARY:Monday Morning Book Club: The Glass Chateau
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of The Glass Chateau by Stephen Kiernan\, a moving novel of hope\, healing\, and the redemptive power of art set in post–World War II France. In the aftermath of the war\, Asher\, a former Resistance assassin haunted by loss and guilt\, wanders through a devastated country searching for purpose. His journey leads him to the Château Guerin\, an unlikely sanctuary where damaged survivors find solace by transforming sand into stained glass for France’s shattered cathedrals. As Asher discovers his own talent for the craft\, he must navigate hidden identities\, lingering resentments\, and fragile alliances among the chateau’s residents. Through shared creation and hard-won trust\, the novel explores how broken individuals can begin to heal—and help rebuild a broken nation. Copies are available at the first-floor circulation desk. New members are always welcome!

SUMMARY:Democracy in Our Time: Mindful Democracy and a Declaration of Interdependence
DESCRIPTION:Democracy is often framed as a contest between political candidates or parties competing for power. But it can also be understood as a shared system of self-governance—one in which everyone has a stake in protecting and sustaining it. In this month’s Democracy in Our Time program\, we’ll listen to and discuss a podcast conversation with Jeremy David Engels about his book\, On Mindful Democracy: A Declaration of Interdependence to Mend a Fractured World. Engels explores the idea of “mindful democracy\,” drawing on democratic theory as well as practices like yoga\, meditation\, and Buddhism. As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence\, Engels invites us to consider the idea of a “declaration of interdependence” and what it might mean for civic life today. The conversation also touches on different visions of democracy from thinkers such as John Dewey and Walter Lippmann. SUMMARY:Shelburne Town Plan Update Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Pierson Library\, in partnership with the Shelburne Planning Commission\, invites you to a Community Dinner & Conversation about Shelburne’s Town Plan Update. Join us on Thursday\, April 30 from 6:00–8:00 PM in Historic Town Hall for an evening of good food and meaningful conversation about the future of Shelburne. Whether you’ve been involved in town planning before or are just curious about it\, this is a welcoming space to learn more\, ask questions\, and share your perspective. Your input will directly inform the upcoming Town Plan update. Dinner will be provided. \nAdvance registration is encouraged to assist with planning (Please RSVP below). We hope you’ll join us and be part of shaping Shelburne’s future.
