SUMMARY:Sustainable Salting Practices and Local Water Quality
DESCRIPTION:While road salting keeps us safe on roads\, sidewalks\, and parking lots during winter\, it also contaminates waterways and groundwater\, kills roadside vegetation\, compacts soils\, and allows heavy metals to move through the soil\, potentially affecting drinking water wells. The good news is that municipal crews\, private contractors\, and individuals can all use sustainable practices that reduce the use of salt and still maintain our safety. In this presentation hosted by Lewis Creek Association and Shelburne NRCC\, Kris Stepenuck (Extension Associate Professor at UVM) will share the basics of a variety of sustainable salting practices that communities\, businesses\, and individuals can adopt to reduce salt use. Kris will also share results of recent interviews with Chittenden County road foremen about their salting practices\, and what motivations and barriers they face in reducing salt use during winter snow and ice management. Lewis Creek Association’s Kate Kelly will share results from recent water quality sampling for chloride in local streams.

SUMMARY:Weed Your Attic
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation that’s equal parts informative and charming! David Boucher\, vice president of the Shelburne Historical Society and former manager of Gardener’s Supply\, comes to us with a conversation about a different type of weeding: your stuff! Ah\, the attic\, ever the repository of forgotten relics and whatsits. As we\, in our individual journeys as downsizers and minimizers\, seek to cull our lifetimes (and parents’ lifetimes\, and parents’ parents’ lifetimes\, etc.) of accumulated belongings\, one question is ever begged into our quivering ears: “Yeah\, but what’s the historical value of all this?” Well\, if there’s one feller who can tell us\, it’s David Boucher! Downsizing with an eye toward the historical record\, it’s Weed Your Attic at the Pierson Library! \n

SUMMARY:Coffee and Conversation: Race
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a monthly gathering of friends and neighbors where we sit for caffeine-and-donut-fueled conversation around a different topic each month\, sometimes thorny\, sometimes light\, typically timely. We may not always agree\, but we can always respectfully listen and share. This month’s topic is Race. Is there such a thing as racial divides among us? To what extent must we socially uphold the construct? Are our nation and social systems designed to uphold white supremacy? Can there be a culture around a racial identity without stereotyping? When and if we obtain true equality at last\, will we still need race? How can we celebrate our differences without othering one another? How can we recognize our sameness without whitewashing one another? These are a handful of the questions that we may explore.
