SUMMARY:Ancient Wisdom\, Modern Science: Ayurveda & Circadian Medicine
DESCRIPTION:This talk from Monika Jaeckle of Intergate Ayurveda\, explores the intersection of Ayurveda—India’s ancient natural medical system—and circadian medicine\, a modern field that studies how our bodies and minds are influenced by daily rhythms of light and dark. Both traditions remind us that our behaviors matter deeply: when we eat\, sleep\, move\, and rest can either support or undermine our health. Through a slide lecture followed by Q&A\, we’ll look at how choosing our daily activities in alignment with the cycles of the sun and moon allows us to tap into nature’s powerful healing forces\, supporting resilience and longevity in often surprising ways.

SUMMARY:A Revolution Will Not be Tweeted (Historical Lecture)
DESCRIPTION:“We the People” are invited to a fascinating presentation exploring the history of printing during the American Revolution\, centered around an authentic old-style printing press. When the handwritten Declaration of Independence arrived at a local print shop on the evening of July 4\, 1776\, it was “mass produced” overnight\, though by today’s standards the process was anything but fast. Each copy was set entirely by hand\, one letter at a time\, carefully locked into a press bed and printed individually by hand. That same deliberate and intentional methodology used by early revolutionaries to spread the ideas of 1776 is still practiced today at A Revolutionary Press\, a working print shop in New Haven\, Vermont. During this presentation\, attendees will learn how the press’s mission\, deeply inspired by the Declaration of Independence\, guides its work to spark a different kind of revolution for the present and future by listening to and printing the words of today’s lesser-known radical and revolutionary thinkers. The presentation will be delivered by John Vincent\, Director of A Revolutionary Press\, and is offered free of charge thanks to our event partners\, Vermont Humanities and The Shelburne Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Death Cafes are opportunities to gather and increase awareness of death so that we might make the most of our finite lives. Moderated by Shelburne resident Nick Marconi\, these intimate monthly discussions are a place to voice concerns\, share stories\, ask questions\, and think together about this fact of life. The conversations will inevitably vary depending on who’s in the room\, sometimes meandering into existential and/or philosophical terrain\, sometimes segueing into the practicalities of DNR forms\, wills\, and rights of survivorship. It’s not always easy\, but when we share heart-to-heart we build community and experience a special joy that enhances our lives now. To register\, please call the library at 802-985-5124.

SUMMARY:Pop-up Book Club: Between the World and Me
DESCRIPTION:Any research into Black history comes with a reckoning of an American present. Written as a letter from a father to his son\, Between the World and Me\, situates the illusion of race as the lynchpin used by the American empire to oppress\, enslave and murder Black bodies. As timely and sobering a read as ever\, the lyricism and power of the writing match the uncomfortable truths revealed.

SUMMARY:Democracy in Our Time: A Community Discussion of Orwell’s 1984
DESCRIPTION:Democracy In Our Time is a monthly discussion series that explores timely topics related to democracy\, freedom\, and civic life through books\, ideas\, film screenings\, and speakers. At our February gathering\, we will discuss George Orwell’s classic novel 1984 and its lasting relevance in today’s world. First published in 1949\, 1984 introduced concepts such as Big Brother\, Newspeak\, Doublethink\, and the Thought Police\, ideas that have since become part of our everyday language and our shared understanding of power and control. Orwell’s dystopian vision follows Winston Smith and Julia\, two ordinary people whose desire for truth\, love\, and independent thought becomes an act of rebellion in a society defined by constant surveillance\, historical manipulation\, and totalitarian rule. As we explore the novel together\, we will consider how Orwell’s warnings about censorship\, propaganda\, and the erosion of truth continue to resonate\, and what they can teach us about protecting democratic values today. Copies of the book are available at the first-floor information desk and on our Libby app.

SUMMARY:Shelburne Writes! Poetry Contest
DESCRIPTION:Calling all poetry lovers! Shelburne Writes! is a poetry contest open to writers of all ages\, offering recognition to the top poets in four age categories: elementary school (K-4)\, middle school (5-8)\, high school (9-12)\, and adult (two winners will be chosen from this category). All types of poetry all welcome: traditional\, prose poetry\, experimental poetry\, etc. The subject matter of your entry should be somehow connected to Vermont—it can be as loose as the action simply taking place in Vermont; we are open to your interpretations on the theme. The contest is only open to residents of Shelburne\, and entries will be judged blind by a committee that includes both the Shelburne junior and adult Poet Laureates. Winners from each category will have their poems published in the Shelburne News and will also be highlighted at a poetry reading held at the Library on April 28 at 6:00 pm. Everyone who enters the contest will be invited to attend and read their entries. \n
