SUMMARY:Monday Morning Book Club: Horse
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of Geraldine Brooks’s Horse. The novel follows the story of an enslaved groom and a racehorse named Lexington\, whose bond leads to record-breaking victories across the South. Spanning from the Civil War to 1950s New York and 2019 Washington\, DC\, the novel intertwines the lives of an artist\, a gallery owner\, and scientists uncovering the horse’s hidden history. Based on the true story of Lexington\, it explores art\, science\, obsession\, and the ongoing reckoning with racism.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Club: A Woman of No Importance
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell\, a true story of heroism\, espionage\, and resistance. In 1942 the Gestapo called her “the most dangerous of all Allied spies.” They were referring to Virginia Hall\, a determined American woman with a prosthetic leg who defied expectations and transformed the fight against Nazi occupation in France. As the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines\, Hall built covert networks\, organized sabotage missions\, and became a key force in the French Resistance. Copies of the book are available at the front desk\, and new members are welcome!

SUMMARY:Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Death Cafes are opportunities to gather and increase awareness of death so that we might make the most of our finite lives. Shelburne resident and optometrist Nick Marconi has been leading local death cafes for more than 10 years (most recently at Village Wine and Coffee). Now he’s here at the Pierson Library in a new monthly series of intimate discussions\, where we’ll voice concerns\, share stories\, ask questions\, and think together about this fact of life. It’s not always easy\, but when we share heart to heart\, we build community and experience a special joy that enhances our lives now. To register\, please call the library at 802-985-5124.

SUMMARY:Exhibitionists Book Club: Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl
DESCRIPTION:The Exhibitionists are back with another great book club series pairing great books with exhibits currently on display at Shelburne Museum. You might remember Carrie Brownstein as half of the comedy duo that made up the sketch show Portlandia\, but punk rockers remember her from the riot grrrl band Sleater-Kinney. We think her memoir pairs oh-so-nicely with the museum’s Sound\, Art\, and Ink Exhibit of Higher Ground gig posters currently on display at the Pizzagalli Gallery. To help facilitate the discussion\, we’re joined by Kat Redniss\, the museum’s Public Programs Educator.

SUMMARY:Democracy in Our Time: A Discussion of It Can't Happen Here
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Democracy in Our Time series\, we invite you to join us for a discussion of Sinclair Lewis’s novel It Can’t Happen Here. Written in 1935 during the rise of fascism abroad and economic despair at home\, Lewis’s work remains relevant today. Blending sharp political satire with a chillingly realistic scenario\, the novel imagines how authoritarianism could take root in the United States under the guise of populism and moral reform. Described upon release as “a message to thinking Americans\,” It Can’t Happen Here explores the fragility of democratic institutions and the ease with which fear\, misinformation\, and charismatic leadership can undermine them. In an era where democratic norms continue to be tested\, this book offers a powerful starting point for conversation. Copies of the book are available at the first-floor information desk.

SUMMARY:Nancy Levine & Rachel Spates Author Talk: Light: A Mother and Daughter Memoir of Anorexia
DESCRIPTION:Join the Pierson Library and the Flying Pig Bookstore for a compelling author talk featuring mother-daughter duo Nancy Levine and Rachel Spates as they present Light: A Mother and Daughter Memoir of Anorexia. Told from both of their perspectives\, Light shares the harrowing and ultimately hopeful journey of Rachel’s struggle with and recovery from anorexia. Narrated primarily by Nancy\, with powerful journal entries and reflections from Rachel before\, during\, and after treatment\, this deeply personal memoir offers insight into the insidious voice of an eating disorder and the strength it takes to overcome it. The conversation will touch on mental health stigmas\, OCD\, family history\, and the road to lasting recovery. Moderating the event is licensed psychologist-master Suzanne Adams\, founder and clinical director of the Adams Center for Body and Mind. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
