SUMMARY:Living with Climate Chaos: Philosophical Considerations with Mike Ashooh
DESCRIPTION:For the next several months\, the Pierson Library is teaming up with the Shelburne Climate and Energy Committee on a new series of programs called Living with Climate Chaos. Each event will focus on a different component of our unique existential crisis–an earth with rapidly swaying climate changes and extreme weather conditions. To kick things off we’re reprising a program we did back in April for public philosophy week: a pondering of our philosophical positions around this sensitive topic. Climate change presents a host of challenges for conscientious people. This casual yet timely conversation seeks to explore the myriad potential responses around this important matter. Informal conversation facilitated by UVM Professor of Philosophy Mike Ashooh.

SUMMARY:Spooktacular Film Fest: Bride of Frankenstein
DESCRIPTION:It’s the season of ghouls and ghosts\, when the viscous membrane between worlds gets really thin! To get us in the autumnal mood\, we’re screening major works of spooky cinema all month. For our first film we’re traveling back to 1935 for James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein\, a film that upped the tongue-in-cheek ante of the original to become (arguably) the first horror-comedy. Its TV-PG rating makes it suitable for ages 7 and up\, but sensitive kiddos should be forewarned of the moody monstrous elements. Starring Boris Karloff\, Colin Clive\, and Elsa Lanchester as the eponymous bride. A real treat for all Halloween lovers!

SUMMARY:Exhibitionists Book Club: Poor Things Screening
DESCRIPTION:It’s a Spooktacular Film Fest & Exhibitionists Book Club crossover event as we screen last year’s Poor Things in anticipation of our discussion of the novel the movie is based on. Directed by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth\, The Favourite\, The Lobster) and featuring an all-in\, Oscar-winning performance from Emma Stone\, Poor Things is\, depending on whom you ask\, either an artsploitation movie provocation or a daring work of radical feminism (or both?).  No matter what\, it’s stylish and original! The perfect cinematic experience to set the stage for our discussion of the novel and the New England Now gallery expedition.

SUMMARY:Exhibitionists Book Club: Poor Things
DESCRIPTION:The Exhibitionists are back\, and this time they’re taking on Alasdair Gray’s post-modern pastiche of Victorian literature: Poor Things. Heavily influenced by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (also influencing some artists in the New England Now exhibition)\, Poor Things is a delightfully playful novel written as a series of letters between the fictional characters. Gray was a muralist and cult writer in his time and place (1980s Scotland) who is getting wider recognition now. This discussion will focus on the book but may also touch upon the film and the Shelburne Museum exhibit. Led by Shelburne Museum’s Kat Redniss and the library’s Jasper Oliver\, this is a book club chat you won’t want to miss!

SUMMARY:Second Thursday Lecture Series: Dazed\, Seduced and Transfixed: The Monster Through Time\, in Literature\, and in Our Lives with Shanta Lee
DESCRIPTION:From Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein to Pu Songling’s The Painted Skin\, to Jordan Peele’s Us\, to Lovecraft Country\, to Monsterland\, and to nearly countless vampire tales\, our culture is filled with manifestations of the monster. These figures span genres from mythology to oral tradition to poetry. Alongside this legacy\, moments of history have sometimes raised the question\, “Who is the monster?”: The creatures we have created on screen and on the page\, or the reflection staring back at us? In this presentation\, poet\, photographer\, and Professor Shanta Lee explores what the monster has meant within literature and what it means within our human interactions. This program brought to you in partnership with Vermont Humanities.

SUMMARY:Spooktacular Film Fest: The Haunting
DESCRIPTION:One of the greatest ghost movies ever made\, 1963’s The Haunting (based on Shirley Jackson’s novel The Haunting of Hill House) is a masterclass of unease and ratcheting suspense. Paranormal researchers and specially selected psychics converge on Hill House\, a bad place like none other. While the film features little in the way of onscreen violence\, it is emotionally intense\, suitable for mature 12-year-olds and up. A bona fide chiller and a film of immense artistry. Rated G.
