SUMMARY:The Underwater Archaeology of the American Revolution on Lake Champlain
DESCRIPTION:This presentation from Chris Sabick of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum will share information on a number of previous\, recent\, and current research efforts focused on the Revolutionary War in general\, and the Battle of Valcour Bay (October 1776) and its aftermath. Archaeological excavations at Valcour Bay\, Arnold’s Bay\, and recent documentation and research efforts on the gunboat Spitfire will be discussed. The combination of historical research and archaeological evidence leads to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the pivotal events that took place on Lake Champlain in 1776. This event is co-sponsored by the Shelburne Historical Society and Vermont Humanities Council and is presented in accordance with this year’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

SUMMARY:A Revolution Will Not be Tweeted (Historical Lecture)
DESCRIPTION:“We the People” are invited to a fascinating presentation exploring the history of printing during the American Revolution\, centered around an authentic old-style printing press. When the handwritten Declaration of Independence arrived at a local print shop on the evening of July 4\, 1776\, it was “mass produced” overnight\, though by today’s standards the process was anything but fast. Each copy was set entirely by hand\, one letter at a time\, carefully locked into a press bed and printed individually by hand. That same deliberate and intentional methodology used by early revolutionaries to spread the ideas of 1776 is still practiced today at A Revolutionary Press\, a working print shop in New Haven\, Vermont. During this presentation\, attendees will learn how the press’s mission\, deeply inspired by the Declaration of Independence\, guides its work to spark a different kind of revolution for the present and future by listening to and printing the words of today’s lesser-known radical and revolutionary thinkers. The presentation will be delivered by John Vincent\, Director of A Revolutionary Press\, and is offered free of charge thanks to our event partners\, Vermont Humanities and The Shelburne Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Jack Mayer Author Talk: How Did Germany's Weimar Republic Become the Third Reich?
DESCRIPTION:Defeated\, humiliated\, and in chaos\, Germany after World War I was imperiled by leftist revolution and right-wing violence. Jack Mayer recounts the origins of the Third Reich through the story of Ernst Werner Techow\, a member of the para-military Free Corps and the murderous Organization C\, who was recruited into a clandestine assassination network trying to bring down the fledgling Weimar democracy. Techow participated in the 1922 murder of Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau\, the highest-ranking Jew in the Weimar Republic. But an offer of forgiveness while on trial for his life set him on a complex journey of redemption. Author Jack Mayer based his novel Before the Court of Heaven (our Tuesday Night Book Club pick this month) on this thrilling true tale. This talk brought to us by the Vermont Humanities Council.
