SUMMARY:The Voice of the Hudson Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of The Voice of the Hudson\, a film that documents the 15-day\, 375-mile self-powered journey of eight teenage boys who hiked\, paddled\, and biked from the highest mountain in New York State to Jersey City\, New Jersey\, all the while conducting a water quality study of the Hudson River. The young men’s Source to Sea Expedition took them from Mount Marcy to Manhattan and their citizen science work included analysis of the presence of microplastics in the Hudson’s watershed along the river’s entire course. Joe Dadey\, one of the trip’s planners and leaders\, will be on hand to present the film and answer any questions after the screening. He is the Executive Director of the Saranac Lake-based nonprofit Adirondack Hamlets to Huts. Joe will be joined by Sage Kite-Whidden\, one of the Expedition’s student trekkers.

SUMMARY:Gone Guys Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Over the past fifty years\, boys and young men have steadily disengaged from school\, work\, and broader society. They’re falling behind academically\, struggling with loneliness and isolation\, and facing rising rates of substance abuse and suicide. What can we do as a society to help? Join us for a screening of Gone Guys\, a powerful documentary that explores this urgent question. Through candid interviews and compelling storytelling\, the film sheds light on the challenges faced by boys and men today and highlights the people and programs working to reconnect them to purpose and community. \nInspired by Richard Reeves’s influential book Of Boys and Men and set here in Vermont\, Gone Guys offers both insight and hope. Following the 45-minute screening\, stay for a 30-minute panel discussion with local advocates\, who will reflect on the film’s themes and discuss what they mean for our community. A Q&A will follow. All are welcome\, and admission is free. The event is brought to you in partnership with Shelburne Community School. For more information about the film\, visit goneguysfilm.com.

SUMMARY:Race: The Power of an Illusion (Part 3)
DESCRIPTION:The division of the world’s peoples into distinct racial groups has become so deeply embedded in our psyches\, many would promptly dismiss any suggestion of its falsity. Yet\, that’s exactly what this provocative\, three-part series by California Newsreel claims. Race: The Power of an Illusion questions the very idea of race as innate biology\, suggesting that a belief in inborn racial difference is no sounder than believing that the sun revolves around the earth. Join us for a three-session screening and discussion of this classic yet still timely documentary. This program is presented in collaboration with Shelburne’s Equity & Diversity Committee.
