SUMMARY:Living with Climate Chaos: Planting for Ecological Benefit & Garden Plans for the Shelburne Town Offices Pocket Park
DESCRIPTION:Are you wondering what’s happening with the former pond garden at the Shelburne Town Offices? Are you curious about how to bring ecological benefit to your home landscape? Are you looking for a dose of environmental optimism? In this public talk\, UVM painting professor and landscape designer Steve Budington shares the planting design for Spring ’25 renovations at the Shelburne Town Offices pocket park. Inspired by meadow and shrubland landscapes\, the new gardens feature naturalistic and ecological gardening practices meant to benefit and nourish humans\, wildlife\, and soil. As part of our Climate Chaos series put on in partnership with the Shelburne Climate and Energy Committee\, Budington shares how the landscapes of our home and built environments can support positive ecological change.

SUMMARY:Living With Climate Chaos Series: Pop-Up Book Club - The Great Displacement
DESCRIPTION:Climate chaos is a unique feature of our current age\, and increased frequency and complexity of natural disasters means that many of our fellow humans are becoming displaced\, bereft of home. To examine this issue more deeply we’re discussing Jake Bittle’s The Great Displacement in a pop-up book club. Copies are available at the front desk. Join us for this important discussion.

SUMMARY:Living with Climate Chaos: Philosophical Considerations with Mike Ashooh
DESCRIPTION:For the next several months\, the Pierson Library is teaming up with the Shelburne Climate and Energy Committee on a new series of programs called Living with Climate Chaos. Each event will focus on a different component of our unique existential crisis–an earth with rapidly swaying climate changes and extreme weather conditions. To kick things off we’re reprising a program we did back in April for public philosophy week: a pondering of our philosophical positions around this sensitive topic. Climate change presents a host of challenges for conscientious people. This casual yet timely conversation seeks to explore the myriad potential responses around this important matter. Informal conversation facilitated by UVM Professor of Philosophy Mike Ashooh.
