SUMMARY:A Promise Delivered: Ten American Heroes and the Battle to Rename Our Nation's Military Bases: Connor Williams Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with author\, historian\, and Professor Connor Williams as he discusses his powerful new book\, A Promise Delivered. In 2020\, a bipartisan act of Congress created the Naming Commission and charged it with a historic mission: to rename nine of the U.S. military’s most prominent bases\, all of which had been named for Confederate leaders. Over twenty months\, the commission gathered input from tens of thousands of Americans and carefully examined the nation’s past to select new names that reflect its highest ideals. The result was a list of ten remarkable Americans\, individuals whose courage\, service\, and leadership embody the best of the country. Drawing on his firsthand experience as the commission’s lead historian\, Williams brings these figures to life\, from President Dwight D. Eisenhower to Civil War surgeon Mary Walker to General Richard Cavazos. \nIn 2025\, the restoration of the original Confederate base names reignited national debate\, underscoring the ongoing struggle over how we remember and honor the past. A Promise Delivered offers a compelling and deeply human account of that effort\, one that invites us to reflect on history\, identity\, and the values we choose to uphold. Copies of the book will be available for purchase from our friends at the Flying Pig Bookstore.

SUMMARY:Tom Guiler Author Talk: The Handcrafted Utopia
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special author talk with museum director and historian Tom Guiler! Traveling from Oneida\, New York with his family\, Tom will discuss his new book\, The Handcrafted Utopia. As the jacket describes: “In response to the trauma of industrialization and urbanization in the late nineteenth century\, the Arts and Crafts Movement took America by storm. Art exhibits\, workshops\, and societies dedicated to handicraft\, worker dignity\, and the production of beautiful art for the masses sprouted from California to Boston. They sought to reform the economic and social inequalities of industrial capitalism through communal living\, artistic development\, craft\, and the creation and sale of finely crafted furniture\, architecture\, metalwork\, and more.” Come learn how this powerful movement reshaped American art\, labor\, and community and why its ideals still resonate today.

SUMMARY:Molly Johnsen Book Launch: Everything Alive
DESCRIPTION:Join the Pierson Library\, The Flying Pig Bookstore & Rootstock Publishing for the launch of Molly Johnsen’s debut poetry collection: Everything Alive. With desperate longing\, raw vulnerability and surprising humor\, the collection confronts trauma and disability like long-lost relatives. Johnsen relies on the power and shortcomings of language to highlight the ways “we are manhandled by mortality.” From a therapist’s office to a cave in Italy\, to the raspberry patch in her childhood backyard\, the borders of the material world switch from roadblocks to entryways and back. Johnsen’s work is grounded in precise imagery and keen observation\, with cycles of family\, trauma\, and language at its heart. For this exciting launch\, the poet will be joined in conversation with birth doula\, Sarah Howe. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event.

SUMMARY:Tyler Alexander Author Talk: If I Can Get Home This Fall
DESCRIPTION:Civil War enthusiasts won’t want to miss this compelling presentation by CVU teacher Tyler Alexander\, celebrating the release of his new biography\, If I Can Get Home This Fall\, published by the University of Nebraska Press. The book tells the remarkable story of Dan Mason\, a white soldier who served in both the Sixth Vermont Infantry and later as an officer in the Nineteenth U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War. Drawing from Mason’s heartfelt letters to his fiancée\, Harriet Clark\, along with extensive historical records\, Alexander brings to life a deeply human story of patriotism\, courage\, and moral conviction during one of the most divided times in American history. This is more than just a war story. It’s a powerful reflection on race\, identity\, and the enduring struggle to define democracy. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event\, courtesy of our friends at The Flying Pig Bookstore.

SUMMARY:Author Talk With Ned McMahon: Wisdom and the Baobab Tree
DESCRIPTION:Shelburne resident and UVM professor Ned McMahon\, who is also an international development consultant and former diplomat\, is sharing his first work of fiction with us tonight! Wisdom and the Baobab Tree is about the life\, love and challenges of a somewhat intelligent\, somewhat handsome\, and slightly naïve young American who is drawn into the politics of a fictitious but realistic African country\, drawing on McMahon’s own years of work and life across the continent. This very relevant book tackles themes of both personal and national development\, and the challenges of nurturing a democratic political system in an authoritarian context.

SUMMARY:Peter Camman Author Talk: The Flies Are Too Damn Small: Adventures of a Deeply Flawed Angler
DESCRIPTION:Author and fisherman Peter Camman sets his sights on the art of storytelling\, revealing how fishing tales are their own unique form of folklore\, what makes a great story\, and how the universal appeal of the great outdoors is the perfect subject for a good yarn. Along the way he might tell a tale or two from his new book\, such as the man who catches sharks and bluefish with a drone\, the one who fashions fishing lures out of toilet chains\, and the two fellers who engineer a stampede of grasshoppers at the edge of a trout stream. Camman has been engaging readers for more than 30 years on fishing\, both those who’ve never baited a hook and the lifetime anglers. Come check out this presentation on his latest!

SUMMARY:Leila Philip Author Talk: Beaverland
DESCRIPTION:Join Vermont Land Trust\, the Pierson\, Jericho\, Charlotte\, Lawrence Memorial and Carpenter-Carse libraries\, and the Flying Pig Bookstore for an unforgettable visit with author Leila Philip. Leila is a true multi-hyphenate artist (poet\, lyric-essayist\, playwright\, documentary filmmaker)\, her latest book\, Beaverland\, concerns precolonial times when our forests were still being shaped by the titular rodent and the ways in which the fur trade has impacted our waterways. Publisher’s weekly called it “a triumph of nature writing”. Come to the historic Town Hall for a mind-bending good time!
