SUMMARY:Tyler Alexander Author Talk: If I Can Get Home This Fall
DESCRIPTION:Civil War enthusiasts won’t want to miss this compelling presentation by CVU teacher Tyler Alexander\, celebrating the release of his new biography\, If I Can Get Home This Fall\, published by the University of Nebraska Press. The book tells the remarkable story of Dan Mason\, a white soldier who served in both the Sixth Vermont Infantry and later as an officer in the Nineteenth U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War. Drawing from Mason’s heartfelt letters to his fiancée\, Harriet Clark\, along with extensive historical records\, Alexander brings to life a deeply human story of patriotism\, courage\, and moral conviction during one of the most divided times in American history. This is more than just a war story. It’s a powerful reflection on race\, identity\, and the enduring struggle to define democracy. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event\, courtesy of our friends at The Flying Pig Bookstore.

SUMMARY:Molly Johnsen Book Launch: Everything Alive
DESCRIPTION:Join the Pierson Library\, The Flying Pig Bookstore & Rootstock Publishing for the launch of Molly Johnsen’s debut poetry collection: Everything Alive. With desperate longing\, raw vulnerability and surprising humor\, the collection confronts trauma and disability like long-lost relatives. Johnsen relies on the power and shortcomings of language to highlight the ways “we are manhandled by mortality.” From a therapist’s office to a cave in Italy\, to the raspberry patch in her childhood backyard\, the borders of the material world switch from roadblocks to entryways and back. Johnsen’s work is grounded in precise imagery and keen observation\, with cycles of family\, trauma\, and language at its heart. For this exciting launch\, the poet will be joined in conversation with birth doula\, Sarah Howe. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event.
