SUMMARY:Exhibitionists Book Club: On Point Tour (Offsite at Shelburne Museum)
DESCRIPTION:The Exhibitionists are back with another series pairing great books with exhibits currently on display at Shelburne Museum. This year\, in addition to the free gallery visits and discussions held at the Pierson Library\, we’re adding a third creative response event at the Charlotte Library (a new partner on this series). This first event this season is a tour of the Museum’s exhibit On Point\, led by Public Programs Educator Kat Redniss. On Point\, at the Dana Spencer Textiles Gallery\, features schoolgirl artworks from the Garthwaite Family Collection. Expect extraordinary sewing boxes\, theorem paintings\, silk-on-silk embroideries\, and more. We all think this will go swell with Karen Russel’s 2006 collection\, St. Lucy’s Home for Girl’s Raised by Wolves\, up for discussion at the Pierson Library later this month. For this tour\, meet at the side gate of the Shelburne Museum\, directly to the right of the entrance.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Club: The Frozen River
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon\, a gripping historical mystery inspired by the real life of 18th-century midwife Martha Ballard. Set in Maine in 1789\, the novel begins when a man is discovered frozen in the Kennebec River and Martha is called upon to determine the cause of death. A respected healer and keen observer of her community\, Martha keeps a detailed diary that soon entangles her in a web of secrets\, accusations\, and injustice\, particularly when her findings contradict those of a powerful local physician. As suspicion deepens and a trial approaches\, Martha pursues the truth despite growing personal risk. Richly researched and vividly told\, the novel brings to life a courageous woman who defied social conventions to seek justice in a world determined to silence her. Copies are available at the first-floor circulation desk. New members are always welcome!
