SUMMARY:Shelburne Writes! Poetry Contest
DESCRIPTION:Calling all poetry lovers! Shelburne Writes! is a poetry contest open to writers of all ages\, offering recognition to the top poets in four age categories: elementary school (K-4)\, middle school (5-8)\, high school (9-12)\, and adult (two winners will be chosen from this category). All types of poetry all welcome: traditional\, prose poetry\, experimental poetry\, etc. The subject matter of your entry should be somehow connected to Vermont—it can be as loose as the action simply taking place in Vermont; we are open to your interpretations on the theme. The contest is only open to residents of Shelburne\, and entries will be judged blind by a committee that includes both the Shelburne junior and adult Poet Laureates. Winners from each category will have their poems published in the Shelburne News and will also be highlighted at a poetry reading held at the Library on April 28 at 6:00 pm. Everyone who enters the contest will be invited to attend and read their entries. \n

SUMMARY:Unhoused Voices: A Pop-up Book Club and Community Discussion About Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of Rough Sleepers by Tracy Kidder. This powerful work follows Dr. Jim O’Connell\, a Boston physician who devoted his career to bringing compassionate\, street-based health care to people experiencing homelessness. After being asked to delay a prestigious fellowship for a one-year project\, O’Connell found his life’s calling—building a model of care rooted in dignity\, trust\, and what he calls “a system of friends.” Copies are available to borrow at the library’s first-floor circulation desk. Following our book conversation\, Shelburne’s Social Services Committee Chair Sean Moran and Brandie Benoit\, Board of Directors Chair of the Shelburne Food Shelf\, will share what they’re seeing locally from a boots-on-the-ground perspective\, along with practical ways you can support unhoused neighbors in our community. All are welcome to join this timely and important discussion.
