SUMMARY:Shelburne Writes! Poetry Contest
DESCRIPTION:Calling all poetry lovers! Shelburne Writes! is a poetry contest open to writers of all ages\, offering recognition to the top poets in four age categories: elementary school (K-4)\, middle school (5-8)\, high school (9-12)\, and adult (two winners will be chosen from this category). All types of poetry all welcome: traditional\, prose poetry\, experimental poetry\, etc. The subject matter of your entry should be somehow connected to Vermont—it can be as loose as the action simply taking place in Vermont; we are open to your interpretations on the theme. The contest is only open to residents of Shelburne\, and entries will be judged blind by a committee that includes both the Shelburne junior and adult Poet Laureates. Winners from each category will have their poems published in the Shelburne News and will also be highlighted at a poetry reading held at the Library on April 28 at 6:00 pm. Everyone who enters the contest will be invited to attend and read their entries. \n

SUMMARY:Sustainable Salting Practices and Local Water Quality
DESCRIPTION:While road salting keeps us safe on roads\, sidewalks\, and parking lots during winter\, it also contaminates waterways and groundwater\, kills roadside vegetation\, compacts soils\, and allows heavy metals to move through the soil\, potentially affecting drinking water wells. The good news is that municipal crews\, private contractors\, and individuals can all use sustainable practices that reduce the use of salt and still maintain our safety. In this presentation hosted by Lewis Creek Association and Shelburne NRCC\, Kris Stepenuck (Extension Associate Professor at UVM) will share the basics of a variety of sustainable salting practices that communities\, businesses\, and individuals can adopt to reduce salt use. Kris will also share results of recent interviews with Chittenden County road foremen about their salting practices\, and what motivations and barriers they face in reducing salt use during winter snow and ice management. Lewis Creek Association’s Kate Kelly will share results from recent water quality sampling for chloride in local streams.
